Facelift & Neck Lifts
Face Lift and Neck Lift Procedures
Factors to consider for being a good facelift candidate include:
Skin Elasticity: Good candidates have skin that is still flexible, as the procedure stretches the skin to reduce wrinkles and signs of aging. Supple skin leads to better healing and results.
Good Overall Health: Being in good health is essential for any surgery. Avoid smoking, excessive drinking, or using drugs, and maintain a healthy weight for at least six months. Healthy individuals respond better to anesthesia and recover more effectively.Loose Skin on Your Face or Neck
If you wish to remove skin on your face and neck while tightening your skin and smoothing wrinkles, you may be an ideal candidate. A face Lift will help correct deep lines around your nose, creases on the sides of your mouth, loose skin along your jawline and folds on or around your neck.
What To Expect After Surgery
After your surgery, your face will be carefully bandaged to protect the area as it begins to heal. The dressings are typically removed between 1 to 2 days later, allowing your skin to breathe. Additionally, if a drainage tube has been placed (usually behind the ear), it will also be removed during this same timeframe. Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to remove your stitches within 7 to 10 days, ensuring everything is healing properly.
To manage your comfort, your doctor may prescribe medications specifically aimed at relieving pain after the surgery. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising on your face during the recovery process. Utilizing cold compresses can effectively help relieve these common side effects and promote comfort. Your doctor will likely advise you to keep your head elevated and as still as possible during the initial recovery period to minimize swelling.
Avoiding smoking and even exposure to second-hand smoke is crucial for the 2 to 4 weeks leading up to and following your surgery. Tobacco smoke poses increased risks for skin and tissue injury, which can significantly impair your face's healing process and may even exacerbate scarring.
In general, most individuals find that they can return to their normal daily activities about 2 to 3 weeks after undergoing a facelift. Initially, your face may feel somewhat stiff, and it is common for it to look and feel a bit strange to you. This sensation is entirely normal, but being mentally prepared for this change is important.
You might also experience numbness in the skin that can last several weeks to even months post-surgery. Additionally, your skin may feel rough and dry for several months as it continues to heal. Some men may notice they need to shave in new areas since the skin has been rearranged; however, options like laser hair removal or electrolysis are available to manage any beard hairs that have shifted.
The facelift procedure primarily addresses two-thirds of the face, so in some instances, additional surgeries, such as eyelid surgery (commonly referred to as “blepharoplasty”) or brow lift surgery (often called a “forehead lift”), may be recommended to help individuals achieve optimal and harmonious results.
